When you learned to play your first poker game, probably as a kid, chances are there was no money on the table. It was exciting and fun, as is the nature of any game. But with no risk, there is no incentive to play a smart poker strategy. You played every hand simply hoping to have the best results.

When there is money or something of value in jeopardy of being lost, you become a lot more cautious. Then again, the thought of what you could gain can sometimes blind your caution level. It’s very important to see all sides from a clear stand point. Yes, there is money to be won, but if you do not make wise decisions, it is your money that will be lost instead.

This is why it is so important to have a good poker strategy.

Whether you play in a live setting or at an online poker site, strategy is the key to ultimate victory. An online poker strategy will vary slightly from a live poker strategy, mostly because you cannot physically see your opponents, the expressions they may make or any nervous habits they might exhibit. These are called “poker tells”, but seeing your opponent isn’t always necessary to identify a poker tell.

In order to apply a good poker strategy, you must start from the beginning and work your way up. Beginner poker strategies generally teach players about correct starting hand selections and how to choose stakes. As a novice poker strategist, the lowest stakes are recommended. The higher you go, the more extreme the competition becomes. You do not want to pit your chip stack against players who are much more experienced than yourself.

Intermediate level poker strategies go into more detail, such as learning to read your opponents, using your position at the table as leverage to making moves against early position bettors and when to move up to the next stakes level. You generally never increase stakes unless you are winning consistently at the current level, and only jump a single level higher to avoid overwhelmingly stiffer competition on the felt.

An advanced poker strategy is much more involved, teaching players how to calculate pot odds, make value bets, continuation bets and other ways to get the desired response from your opponents. As an advanced poker player, you can manipulate the pot as well as the other players at the table. It’s a mixture of psychology and mathematics and when combined properly can be extremely effective.

Certain aspects of a solid poker strategy are the kinds of things that can only be learned through experience, but for the most part, doing a little research on the subject can teach you a lot of things that will help you increase your win rate and keep losses to a minimum.

If you’re serious about playing live or online poker, a little education can go a long way! Poker strategies can be found in books, many of which are written by the pros themselves, or by simply searching the internet and reading up on the topics of poker strategy and/or online poker strategy.
